What Is Teaching Methodology?

Teaching methodology covers the principles and techniques of guiding others through yoga: how a class is organized, how instructions are given, how practices are demonstrated, and how a teacher responds to different students. It is one of the 15 core subjects of the 200-Hour TTC.

Cueing

The Anatomy of a Clear Cue

A useful instruction tells the student what to do in a sequence they can follow. Students practise turning long explanations into short, clear cues.

Where to move → How to move → What to feel or notice → When to breathe

Sequencing

Structuring a Class

Students learn a basic class arc and how to adapt it to the time available and the level of the group.

  1. 01

    Opening and centering

Arrive, settle the breath and set the tone for the class.

  2. 02

    Warm-up

Joint movements and gentle flows to prepare the body.

  3. 03

    Main practice

The core āsana sequence for the class.

  4. 04

    Counter-poses

Neutralize and balance the body after the main work.

  5. 05

    Prāṇāyāma or relaxation

Breath work or guided rest to integrate the practice.

  6. 06

    Closing

A quiet close, chant or moment of reflection.

Responsibility

Teaching Ethics and Responsibility

A teacher respects students' boundaries, asks before hands-on adjustments, stays within their scope of practice, and recognizes when a student should seek medical advice.
