A Gentle Beginning to Yoga in Rishikesh

No experience needed — just an open mind and a willingness to begin.

New to yoga? Start with the truth: yoga isn't only asana. Poses are one limb of yoga, not the whole of it — yoga is the inner science of discovering your true self. In this one-week residential course in Rishikesh, the yoga capital of the world, you'll discover what yoga really is and how it can change your whole life.

The course focuses on understanding before intensity: Hatha Yoga, Ashtanga Vinyasa, Pranayama, yogic purification, meditation, mantra chanting, yoga philosophy and relaxation. It helps with physical issues like joint pain, stiffness, weakness and low energy, and mental ones like stress, tension and anxiety — while improving your breathing, energy and metabolism.

The biggest challenge for beginners is consistency, so our teachers guide you every step of the way on how to keep practicing long after the course ends.

Why It Actually Works

Yoga Is More Than Poses

Asana is only one of yoga's eight limbs — real yoga is a complete inner science. In your first week, you'll see why people who understand this stick with their practice for life, while people who only chase poses quit within a month.

Every technique you learn here is chosen because beginners genuinely need it: breath control before backbends, stillness before deep stretching, understanding before intensity.

Seven foundations every beginner needs before going deeper:

01

Correct Breathing

Learn to breathe fully before you ever attempt a challenging pose.

02

Joint Mobility

A gentle joint-movement series that protects you from injury for life.

03

Basic Pranayama

Simple breathing techniques that calm anxiety in minutes, not months.

04

Meditation Basics

Just five focused minutes a day, built up slowly and sustainably.

05

Mantra Chanting

Correct pronunciation and meaning, not just repetition.

06

Yoga Philosophy

Understanding why you practice, so you never lose motivation.

07

A Home Practice Plan

Leave with a realistic routine you'll actually keep.

Together, these seven foundations are what separate a beginner who quits after two weeks from one who builds a lifelong practice — you don't need all of them perfected, just introduced, in the right order.

“You don't need to be flexible to start yoga. You need to start yoga to become flexible.”

FAQs

Yoga for Beginners — Frequently Asked Questions

No — this course is designed specifically for people who have never practiced yoga before. Every technique is taught step by step, from the ground up, with close guidance from our teachers.

For most beginners, the real challenge isn't learning the postures — it's staying consistent once you go home. Our teachers spend time helping you build a simple, realistic practice schedule you can actually keep up with after the course ends.

No. This is a 7-day residential course focused on understanding and foundational practice, and it ends with a Siddhant School of Yoga course completion certificate — not a Yoga Alliance teaching certification. If you want to teach professionally, our 200-hour YTTC is the right next step.

Yes. Siddhant School of Yoga is a Registered Yoga School with Yoga Alliance USA (RYS 200, RYS 300, RYS 500). This particular retreat itself gives a Siddhant School of Yoga completion certificate, not a Yoga Alliance teaching certificate — only our 200-hour, 300-hour and 500-hour Teacher Training Courses lead to an official Yoga Alliance RYT credential.

Anyone with the right attitude toward learning and practicing yoga. Beyond that, we ask that you: be in good physical health, keep an open mind, commit to full attendance, follow a vegetarian diet during the course, avoid alcohol, drugs and smoking, have basic English proficiency, be between 18–60 years old, have had no surgery in the last year, and not bring children along.

Two clear color photocopies of your passport (plus the original for verification), two passport-size photos, and your visa expiry details.

Yes, an Indian Tourist e-Visa is mandatory for foreign nationals. It's also a good idea to arrange travel and health insurance before you depart.

We recommend arriving a day early. You'll check in, rest, then complete your registration form and pay any remaining balance, followed by a short tour of the yoga hall and dining area.

The day begins with a morning Hatha class (8–9 AM) and breakfast, followed by a traditional fire ceremony at 10:30 AM, a group photo and your study materials. At 3 PM there's an orientation covering teachers, syllabus, rules and goals for the retreat.

Two passport-size photos, your phone and charger, a debit card, seasonal and comfortable yoga clothing, comfortable shoes, a travel towel, and a small first-aid kit with any personal medicines. Leave expensive jewelry at home — the school isn't responsible for lost valuables.

The advance/registration deposit is non-refundable. In a genuine emergency, you can postpone to another scheduled batch within the same year by emailing us your reason. Cancellations are accepted by email at no extra charge, but the deposit itself is not refunded.
